FINDING MEANING IN OUR UNCONSCIOUS: CHALLENGING MODERN MODALITIES

It’s no secret that today’s fast-paced world can trigger feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety. Smartphones, social media, and constant connection may seem like the “why” behind these feelings, but in reality, they’re just symptoms. The real trigger behind the societal sickness many face, concerns the modalities and paradigms that dictate modern life. Although these modalities may seem unconquerably oppressive, they don’t have to be. We’ll look at two ways that our founder, Amanda, can use to help coach her clients into finding meaning through their unconscious minds.

Challenging Modalities with Meditation

Every year, more and more Americans are recognizing the benefits of meditation. Research has shown that meditation may provide a variety of benefits like:

  • Lengthening Attention Span: One of the core ideas behind meditation involves focusing your attention on stimuli you choose, not intrusive ones that force their way to the forefront of your mind. And as it is with anything, practice makes perfect. Data suggests that the focus gained during meditative practice can also carry on to other aspects of life, lengthening a practitioner’s attention span.
  • Improving Emotional Health: Some forms of meditation, including mindfulness meditation (more on that later), can positively impact self-esteem – and there’s science to prove it, too. Research has shown that those who practice meditation feel fewer symptoms of depression. They also felt fewer negative feelings when viewing unpleasant stimuli.
  • Reducing Stress and Anxiety: When we feel stress, our body releases a neurochemical called cortisol. Cortisol can trigger many results, but one of the biggest is flooding your body with cytokines. These tricky little molecules can trigger sleep problems, cloud your thinking, increase blood pressure, and, notably, contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety.

Some of these results come from meditation heightening practitioners’ sense of themselves and their place in the world. And that, in turn, can help their minds break out of the modalities that govern them.

Getting Started with Mindfulness Meditation

If you’re interested in meditation, getting started is easy. One great way to dip your feet into the world of meditation is b practicing mindfulness. This technique involves paying attention to your breath as you draw it in and out of your body. Do your best to block out any intrusive or external thoughts. Focus instead on existing in the present and try to observe and experience the world around you without interpreting it.

This can actually be more difficult than it sounds. But with some practice, you’ll soon find mindfulness meditation coming naturally.

Challenging Modalities with Plant Medicine

Although they were previously viewed with suspicion by many, plant medicines are becoming another tool to help people break out of today’s postmodern technological paradigms and find meaning in their unconscious minds.

Simply put, plant medicine opens the door to the unconscious mind. We are often unaware of our darker aspects, called our “shadow.” That’s not an accident – we find acknowledging these aspects unpleasant even if we know them. When we ignore these aspects, we actually cultivate more unpleasantness in our conscious life by not acknowledging these hidden or uncomfortable aspects.

For example, when our founder Amanda, experienced her first DMT session (an encounter she reached that she is now certified to administer) she experienced her capacity to hate people. That aspect wasn’t something she felt was within her, and worse yet, it was towards a close family member. When she could develop a loving relationship with that unclaimed part of herself, she could fully forgive the person and develop a healthy and functional relationship with them.

Integrating Plant Medicine Experiences Into Our Lives

Here’s one thing that many first-time plant medicine users don’t consider. These kinds of modality-challenging experiences aren’t an instant panacea. Instead, you’ll need some kind of post-experience integration to help you make the most of it. And that’s not always something that you can do alone. Instead, you’ll need someone with experience in plant medicine to help. Fortunately, you’ve already found her.
